I love Generations, I think fans are unduly hard on it. Yes the plot falls apart once you tug at it but the whole film is so gorgeously shot, and there's some great character stuff in there.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I love it to, for the same reasons as yourself. I've just never liked the punk ass way they dispatched the Enterprise. A Ship of that majesty just doesn't deserve an ending like that.
I could never work out why they didn't rotate the shield frequency as soon as they realised the BOP had managed to get through the shields. That's what they do in practically every episode ever, rotate the shields.

Generations is a bittersweet pill for me. Sure, we get to see the Enterprise D in a whole new light (literally!), but we also see her demise.
